How to make a transparent PNG
A transparent image stores opacity for each pixel so another background can show through.

Know what you are looking at
The gray checkerboard in many editors is only a visual aid. It should not appear as squares in a proper transparent PNG. A white rectangle around an object means the background is still opaque. A white background can look similar in a viewer with a white page, so test the file on a colored surface.
Make and check the file
- Use the transparent background maker or another editor that supports transparency.
- Remove the backdrop, then inspect interior gaps such as the space inside a handle or between arms and torso.
- Choose PNG at download. Open the actual file over black, white and gray; zoom in on pale fringes.
Avoid common mistakes
Renaming a JPG to “.png” does not create transparency. Likewise, replacing the background with white creates an opaque image. A screenshot of a checkerboard bakes the pattern into the pixels. If you need smaller delivery files, keep the master PNG and test a WebP copy in your target app. Some workflows discard alpha during import even when the file contains it.
For print, ask the printer which color mode and file format they accept. For web graphics, set the displayed size explicitly so a large original is not unnecessarily loaded at full resolution. If another app shows white behind your PNG, inspect it in a second app before assuming the file failed: some viewers simply display transparency over white. A quick test is to place the file above a saturated rectangle in a slide or image editor.
