How to remove an image background
A good cutout starts with a source image that makes the subject easy to identify.
Start with the photograph
Keep the whole subject inside the frame, including handles, hair or paws you want to retain. Sharp focus and contrast between the subject and its surroundings help an automatic mask. When photographing a product, leave a little space around it; tight cropping can permanently remove an edge.
Remove and inspect
- Choose a PNG, JPG or WebP in the background remover.
- Wait for the browser to produce a first cutout. A checkerboard means the removed area is transparent, not white.
- Move the before/after control. Zoom into small details and look for missing foreground, stray fragments and light or dark halos.
- Use erase or restore for clear local mistakes. If an entire detached object is missing, check whether the Keep subject control can recover it.
Choose the final file
Use PNG when later designs need real transparency. Use an opaque JPG when a solid background is acceptable, or WebP if your destination supports the kind of output you need. Open the downloaded result, not just the editor preview, and inspect it over dark and light colors. The editor can preserve the source dimensions, but the quality of fine hair or transparent glass still depends on the source and mask.
Automatic selection is a first pass. Complex compositions, reflective products and overlapping people may need correction or a different source photo.
